Project title: Reconnecting Communities with Nature Through Mobile Awareness Project
Project Status: Since 2023 (Ongoing)
Project Partners: Rural communities, local authorities.
Location: All regions of Puntland, Somalia, focusing on remote, hard-to-reach villages.
Project Overview & Aim: Since 2023, this project has been bridging a critical information gap in rural communities. We travel directly to the most remote, off-grid villages across Puntland to deliver urgent conservation education and rebuild the deep, cultural connection between communities and their environment.
The Challenge: How do you explain biodiversity loss or climate change to communities with no electricity, no internet, and high illiteracy rates? This profound disconnect, exacerbated by decades of instability, leads to unsustainable practices that further degrade the very ecosystems these communities depend on for survival.
Our Solution: We bring the message directly to the village square. Using a robust mobile unit with an inflatable screen, we transform any space into a theatre for learning and dialogue. Through compelling films and facilitated discussions, we make complex issues understandable and urgent, inspiring a groundswell of local stewardship—from tree planting to protecting wildlife—proving that the most powerful technology is often the most accessible.
"Conservation begins with connection — when people understand, they care; when they care, they act. Empowering communities through education is the heartbeat of lasting environmental change." - SSI-
Impact At Scale
Since its launch in 2023, the project has made measurable progress in reconnecting rural communities with nature
- Reached over 47,123 people in remote areas of Puntland
- Conducted 45+ outdoor public screenings across rural villages
Raised awareness on biodiversity loss, deforestation, climate change, and wildlife protection - Inspired 267+ documented local actions, such as tree planting, community clean-ups, and conservation dialogues
- Contributed to reduced pressure on ecosystems, with fewer native trees cut and declining reports of wildlife hunting
- Helped restore emotional connections between people and nature, especially among youth and women
