Who We Are
Species Saviour Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of critical plants and animal species in the Golis Mountain ranges of Puntland, Somalia. We provide technical, policy, and extension support to rural communities, emerging civil society groups, traditional authorities, and government institutions, fostering inclusive management of Somalia’s vital landscapes.
We focus on the conservation of Frankincense (Dracaena ombet) and its habitats, alongside protecting associated wildlife like the Cheetah, Warsangeli linnet, and the Somali sengi (Elephant shrew). The Golis Mountains, a semi-arid region, are home to many of Somalia’s endemic species, making our work essential for preserving this unique ecosystem.
In partnership with local communities and government entities, we strive to ensure the long-term health of this extraordinary landscape. Our initiatives emphasize sustainable forest resource management, ecosystem restoration, and socio-economic sustainability. We seek to balance economic pressures with natural resource sustainability, integrating conservation efforts with sustainable non-timber forest management, land use, and water resource management. By aligning these areas, we aim to secure vital habitats for future generations.
We actively mobilize local communities, leverage technology, and advocate for policy changes to promote sustainable practices. Our commitment to empowering communities and fostering environmental stewardship positions us as a key player in the conservation landscape of Puntland, working towards a resilient and thriving ecosystem
Why Species Saviour
The name “Species Saviour” reflects our organization’s commitment to preserving Golis landscape. As a biodiversity hotspot in the Horn of Africa, Somalia boasts a wealth of unique plant and animal species. However, this diversity is increasingly threatened by various factors, including habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. The urgency of our mission is underscored by the alarming statistics provided by the IUCN Red List, which identifies numerous species in Golis as critically endangered, data deficient and/or vulnerable. With 218 threatened species documented by IUCN, it’s clear that concerted conservation efforts are essential to safeguarding Somalia’s natural heritage.
