About SSI
The Species Saviour Initiative (SSI) is a Somali-led conservation organization working to protect threatened species and habitats, restore ecosystems, and address illegal wildlife and plant trade. Since 2021, SSI has led frankincense conservation and awareness programs across the Golis Mountains and beyond. Our current project tackles the illegal plant trade while building the first open datasets on frankincense species for sustainable management.
Role Overview
The Awareness Officer will lead community outreach, awareness campaigns, and communication activities to highlight the threats posed by illegal plant trade and promote sustainable practices. The role requires creativity, strong community engagement skills, and the ability to translate scientific findings into messages that resonate with local audiences and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver awareness campaigns (community dialogues, school outreach, cultural events, social media content).
- Develop communication materials (flyers, posters, short videos, radio content) tailored to local audiences.
- Engage directly with harvesting communities to raise awareness on sustainable frankincense practices and stewardship.
- Support virtual and in-person dissemination workshops on project findings.
- Document impact stories, case studies, and lessons learned for local and global sharing.
Required Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Communications, Education, Community Development, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Demonstrated experience in awareness campaigns, community engagement, or advocacy.
- Strong Somali and English communication skills (oral and written).
- Knowledge of conservation, environmental issues, or illegal trade challenges in Somalia is a strong advantage.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with communities and partners.
