The Challenge

Key Issues

In the remote areas where we work, the wellbeing of local people is often overlooked. Health facilities, such as maternal and child health centers and health posts, are few and under-resourced. For example, if someone is bitten by a snake, they must travel to Bosaso, the nearest town, which is approximately 300 km away from districts and settlements around the Golis Mountains, stretching from the Sanaag region in the northwest to the Gardafu region in the northeast. Women, children, and the elderly frequently suffer from tropical diseases and do not receive the healthcare they need.

Similarly, the education system in these areas is very poor. Schools in districts like Ufeyn, Alula, Qandala, and Bargaal in the Bari and Gardafu regions often lack the necessary resources and facilities to provide quality education. Our commitment to conservation includes addressing these challenges to ensure that both people and wildlife can thrive together

Our Responses

EDUCATION CAN NOT WAIT

Education Enhancement

Species Saviour Initiative is dedicated to improving education in remote areas. We build or renovate school facilities to provide safe and conducive learning environments, and supply schools with necessary educational materials such as books, desks, and technology. We implement teacher training programs to improve the quality of education and support the establishment of community learning centers that offer after-school programs and adult education. Additionally, we promote environmental education to instill conservation values in the younger generation.

Supported 4,750 pupils

• Rehabilitated 3 schools
• Distributed 10 tons of recreational and learning materials

Healthcare Improvement

Species Saviour Initiative distributes essential medical supplies to maternal and child health centers (MCHs) and health posts in Ufeyn, Alula, and Bargal districts in the Bari and Gardafu regions. We train local healthcare workers in snakebite treatment and other common medical emergencies. Additionally, we implement health education programs focusing on the prevention and treatment of tropical diseases.

Impact and Outcome

Medical Supplies Distribution: Delivered 15 tons of essential supplies, including medications and patient beds, benefiting over 10,000 patients annually.
Healthcare Worker Training: Trained 343 health workers in snakebite treatment and emergency care, enhancing services for 20,000 community members.
First Aid Kits for Harvesters: Provided kits to 430 frankincense harvesters, improving safety for them and their 1,500 family members.
Health Education Programs: Educated over 15,000 individuals on the prevention and treatment of tropical diseases.

These efforts have significantly improved healthcare infrastructure and services in Ufeyn, Alula, and Bargal districts.
