Positive Outcomes for Jidmoxor Frankincense Sites: A Success Story from Species Saviour Initiative

The Jidmoxor Frankincense sites, located in the Golis ranges near Ufeyn district, have shown remarkable improvement and regeneration, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Species Saviour Initiative. Following comprehensive training on best practices and good governance provided to local custodian committees in 2021, the sites are now thriving, with trees in excellent health and new growth evident.

Species Saviour’s intervention at Jidmoxor focused on empowering local communities through education and hands-on training. In 2021, custodian committees were established and trained in sustainable harvesting techniques, site management, and the importance of biodiversity conservation. These committees were tasked with overseeing the health and productivity of the frankincense trees, which are crucial to both the local economy and the ecosystem.

A recent assessment conducted by Species Saviour in June 2023 reveals the positive impact of these efforts. The site visit showed a significant increase in tree regeneration and overall health. Remarkably, 78 frankincense trees that were overharvested and close to dying have now fully recovered after being given 1.5 years of rest. The once-declining frankincense trees are now flourishing, with new saplings emerging and a notable reduction in overharvesting practices.

“Our approach has always been to work hand-in-hand with the local communities, providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to sustainably manage their natural resources,” said a representative from Species Saviour. “The results we see today at Jidmoxor are a testament to the effectiveness of community-led conservation efforts.”

The training provided in 2021 emphasized the importance of good governance and sustainable practices, which the custodian committees have successfully implemented. By adhering to these practices, the committees have not only improved the health of the frankincense trees but also ensured the long-term viability of the sites.

The positive outcomes at Jidmoxor have broader implications for conservation efforts across Somalia. They demonstrate that with the right training and support, local communities can play a pivotal role in protecting and regenerating vital natural resources. This success story is expected to inspire similar initiatives in other regions, fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

As Species Saviour continues its mission to protect and conserve Somalia’s biodiversity, the success at Jidmoxor stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration, education, and dedication to sustainable practices. The organization’s future plans include expanding training programs to more communities, further strengthening the foundation for a sustainable and prosperous natural environment.
